Activity filled weekend for families blog post
Eight families joined leaders at Thriftwood campsite, Brentewwod, Essex atvthe weekend for the groups first familiy camp for 3 years. Despite rumours of storms, we all made it to the campsite on Friday evening and were settled in by dark.
Families were welcomed by Cavan as camp leader and introducednto the leadership team and the camp was officially opened by the lighting of the campfire.
Saturday saw the sun blazing through the clouds and apart from a couple of very brief showers, stayed with us all day. In the morning Scouting skills were laid on, fire lighting, and backwoods, not backwards, cooking were popular, as was the woodland walk around the site. Not sure how some got lost on a circular route, but everyone enjoyed it anyway.
The afternoon saw a bit of friendly comptition with family members trying to outshoot each other on the air rifle range. After dinner, some families joined in with the site run campfire before returning to the campsite to join in with the impromptu campfire singing lead by Skip and Akela. Then it was off to bed.
Sunday stared off with glorious sunshine and all the campers going to the lake to take part in kayaking and raft building. Both the rafts both proved to be well built, sturdy craft with only one lost barrel on the water. For some reason, everyone ended up very wet. Ok, they were sort of attacked with water, whilst trying to paddle away.
After drying off, it was off to the archery range where a very nervous Ribs(Michael) ran his first archery session since qualifying only last month. Well done, those who took part enjoyed their first archery experience.
After lunch, most families took abvantage of the continued good weather to get their tents down and pack up and get home.
Unfortunately, the weather then changed and the leaders got wet getting the rest of the equipment down and packed on to the Van.
Back at the hall, we were grateful to those families who came to the hall to help unload and put the gear away.
Thank you all the families who came and made the weekend such a good camp, and thank you to all the leaders who gave up their time. Hope to see you at next years camp.
